Breeding And Awards

Joseph's coat is a red blend large flower floribunda climbing rose. It was bred by David L. Armstrong and Herbert C. Swim in the United State in 1964. It is a cross between 'Buccaneer (Yellow grand flora -1952) and 'Circus' (yellow blend floribunda -1956 by Swim).

it has been awarded with the National Rose Society Trial Ground Certificate in 1963 and the Bagatelle Gold Medal in 1964. No need to guess how it got the name! The colors are absolutely stunning.

The Joseph's coat rose produces clusters of flowers with mix suffused yellow, orange, pink and red. The budding rose has coral shades and opens up as golden yellow. The yellow blooms then gradually changes back to the shades of orange and crimson red as it ages. The bloom of the flower ranges from medium to large.

The medium sized rose bears 23 to 28 petals and a large sized will bear 26 to 40 petal counts. The diameter of an average bloom is approximately 4 inches. The rose is cup shaped and double. It bears a mild fruity rose fragrance. The foliage of the plant varies from medium to dark green and appears glossy. This modern climber rose is relatively thorny. The rose blooms repeatedly throughout the season. The rose is quite winter hardy with winter hardiness of USDA zone 4 to 10.

With bright blend colors of red, yellow and orange the rose showcases a beautiful display of vibrant colors in the garden. It appears clustered together. The rose is very tough and durable. Due its well formed growth the rose can be used for different purposes in the garden. You can use the Josephs coat rose to climb up your garden gates, pillar and walls. It can also be used to develop natural fences and hedges in your garden.

The rose looks beautiful as boundary and borders in the garden. The canes can be easily trained horizontally and vertically to make extravagant landscaping. Along with low maintenance and quick growth the vibrant colors of this rose is sure to adorn any garden. The rose in the climbing form can attain 8 to 10 feet with the width of 4 feet. This plain beauty greets the spring with bright colors and the roses are repetitive throughout the summer.

Caring For Jospeh's Coat

The pruning of this rose plant should not be done for first two years until the rose has settled down in your garden well. The older blooms should be removed to encourage new blooms. The rose is resistant to diseases and black spots. However it can fall prey to mildews in damp and humid climate so it is generally not recommended there. It is recommended to do the pruning with thick leather glove as these have big thorns. The rose requires partial to full sun and regular watering to get the bright and healthy blooming plant.
